    Leader:  Bob Howdeshell

    Phone:  (865) 410-5479

    E-mail:  bob.howdeshell@gmail.com

Location:  Cedar Bluff Public Library--Meeting Room

9045 Cross Park Dr. Knoxville, TN 37923

Description of the event:  The plan will be to discuss how to photograph insects “in the field” by using macro / close-up photography techniques. I will reference “on line” sources for insect macro photography tips and ideas.  Additionally I will discuss the gear that I use (cameras, lenses, flash, flash diffusers).

Who should come:  Anyone even mildly curious about trying their hand at macro insect photography. There will be no requirement for attendees to “touch” the critters

What to bring?  Bring your camera and a macro lens or a lens that has a very close-focusing distance ability.  I plan to bring a couple of my pet "jumping spiders" that attendees will be able to photograph.

SANP proudly presents The Wonderful World of Waterfalls and Night Photography by Kevin Adams.  SANP is offering you a unique opportunity to attend a workshop by a master of waterfall photography in the morning and a master of night photography in the afternoon.

Kevins Adams has written the authoritative book on North Carolina waterfalls. It is a must-have if you plan to visit and photograph the waterfalls in the state.  Kevin has photographed waterfalls in many places, including in the Smokies, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Appalachian states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, and Canada.  He will share his tips on photographing waterfalls during the day and at night.  You will learn tips from the master of waterfall photography that you can use in your photography.

The second half of the workshop will cover night photography. In this section, you will discover ideas and tips for making exciting and unconventional night photos, as well as how to make the shots everyone strives for like the Milky Way and night sky.

Kevin Adams is a naturalist, writer, teacher, and photographer who has had a lifelong love affair with nature and the outdoors. In addition to photo credits in all manner of publications,

Kevin is the author and photographer of ten books. Kevin's books on waterfalls in North Carolina are a must-have for waterfall photographers who photograph waterfalls in North Carolina. An accomplished photography instructor, he leads photo tours  and teaches numerous workshops and seminars throughout the year. Often called the “MacGyver of Photography,” he designed and sells several unique products for night photographers.

Kevin lives in Waynesville, North Carolina, with his wife, Patricia, their elderly cat, Lucy, three hellion cats he personally rescued from Puerto Rico, and two more cats that showed up one day and decided to move in. Oh, and the raccoons, skunks, and opossums that show up every night to steal the cat’s food.

    Who Should Attend:

You. Whether you are a beginner photographing waterfalls or taking night photographs; or an advanced waterfall or night photographer, YOU will learn tips and tricks that you never considered for waterfallls or night photography.   This is your chance to learn from one of the masters of waterfall photography and night photography, especially if you do not have the time to commit to attending his on-location workshops.

Why Should You Attend Kevin's Workshop:

People used to ask Kevin Adams what is there to photograph at night, but today, night photography is extremely popular, with photographers capturing all sorts of nighttime subjects. Nothing new to do, right? Not so fast!

In this presentation, Kevin covers the typical stuff— the Milky Way, star trails, lighthouses, cityscapes, etc.—but he’ll also talk about photographing subjects you’ve never thought of, and share techniques for photographing ordinary subjects in ways you’ve never imagined.

Fair warning, though. Kevin says that after you attend this presentation, you won’t get much sleep going forward—unless you do it in the daytime!

What you will discover:  Night photography is an area of photography you can accomplish without having to do long hikes, or having clear skies. At the end of this workshop you will learn how to take your night photography skills to a new level.

What to Bring: A notepad and pen.  You cannot record the workshop.

Rules to Know:  This is a nonrefundable event.  No exceptions.

Available for purchase:  Kevin will have some of his books and the other products he uses for photography available for sale. You can pay by cash, check, or Venmo.

Date and Time:  March 29, 2025. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. The presentation will start at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 3:00 p.m. with appropriate breaks. Lunch will be served onsite at noon.

Drinks:  Drinks are allowed in the auditorium in containers that will not spill.  Food is not allowed in the auditorium.

Lunch: Your registration fee includes a box lunch. It is important that you select your lunch option when you register.

Location: Goins Auditorium in the J. L. Goins Administration Building on the Hardin Valley campus of Pellissippi State Community College, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville TN

Registration is available through March 16th, or all seats are taken.  There is no registration at the door. Everyone who attends must register online, with no exceptions.

    Registration fees:

SANP Member fee is $99 dollars.

    Non-member fee is $120 dollars

Frozen Head Wildflowers with Kris Light

    Wednesday, April 16th, 2025

    Leader: Kris Light    Phone: (865)742-8278      E-mail: klight10@gmail.com

Meeting place: Frozen Head State Park Visitor Center

    Time:  10:00 am

    Registration available:  Beginning today

Description: Wildflower expert Kris Light will be leading this field event for wildflowers at Frozen Head State Park. The park is renowned for its variety of spring wildflowers. Kris is an expert in wildflowers at Frozen Head State Park. Join her for this walk through Frozen Head State Park in search of wildflowers.

You can expect to find several varieties of violets and trillium, wild iris, wild geranium, and many more. If the weather cooperates and the temperatures are warm enough, you may see butterflies, bees, beetles, millipedes. Interesting fungi, mosses, and lichens are a good possibility also. DeBord Falls on Panther Branch Creek is a short walk, about ¼-mile from the trailhead. Small cascades and moss-covered boulders along the stream offer nice photo opportunities.

If there is time to reach the “Trillium Field” on the Panther Branch trail, you will see numerous large-flowered White Trillium, Perfoliate Bellwort, Cumberland Spurge, Spotted and Yellow Mandarin, Dwarf Ginseng, and many other wildflowers.

    Learning opportunities:

    • Artistic composition
    • Getting adequate depth of field and a good background for a macro subject
    • Isolating the subject from the background using a long lens
    • Field identification of early spring wildflowers

    What to bring:

    • Macro lens if you have one
    • Close-up accessories such as extension rings, screw on close-up lens and teleconverters
    • Medium telephoto lenses
    • Polarizing filter
    • Reflectors and diffusers
    • Tripod
    • Water and Snacks

Rain gear for yourself and a rain cover for your camera in case of rain.

Walking required: The trail is an easy to moderate 4 mile in and out trail.

Driving directions: Use Google for the Frozen Head State Park Visitor Center.  After everyone arrives, Kris will instruct you where you will proceed for parking.  Parking is limit at Frozen Head. You may want to carpool as this is a busy time of year for visitors at the Park.
