Maximum Number of Participants (5 minimum for judging): No maximum.

Purpose of this Challenge:   Over the past few photo challenges we've covered a variety of subjects and techniques. I've received feedback that some folks would like a challenge focused on wildlife, and with so many SANP members searching for wildlife this time of year, this is a great time to set up something a little different. So with that in mind I offer the following challenge:

Create a series of photographs that show wildlife as an integral part of the landscape rather than as isolated subjects. The image should emphasize environment, scale, and place, with the animal or animals existing within their habitat rather than dominating the frame. Wide or environmental compositions are encouraged; classic wildlife portraits, tight crops, or shallow depth-of-field isolation are discouraged. Subjects may be small in the frame if doing so strengthens the relationship between the wildlife and its surroundings. The goal is to communicate how animals occupy, move through, or interact with their environment. Note the lens limitation below to help us focus on the bigger picture. To be honest I have difficulty pulling my eye away from any animal that stops long enough for me to photograph it. But, as wildlife photographers, we visit so many locales that offer fantastic landscape photography. Hopefully this challenge will help you, and me, to look at the larger scene and document the environment that our subjects live in. And, this will allow our landscape friends to practice incorporating our favorite species into their wonderful scenics.

You may ask, "What's so challenging about this?" Well, it's all about execution. It's easy to snap a quick shot of an animal out in the environment. The challenge is taking a compelling shot of an animal that is well composed within a landscape that is also well composed. One must be very deliberate to successfully create this type of shot without it appearing to be a simple snapshot. Watch your exposure balance between the subject and its environment; this can be quite tricky especially in very bright scenes. Also, try to incorporate dramatic lighting across the landscape and the animal subject. It's often difficult to balance the two; most attempts create a flat image of the subject or the landscape if the photographer is not careful. This challenge can create some of our most creative shots yet. I cannot wait to see what you capture.

Challenge Procedure:  You must register for this challenge if you want to submit images for judging. You may submit up to three images for judging, following the guidelines below for file naming, file size, and deadline. Please follow file naming closely, many of the images submitted in previous challenges incorporate the file name incorrectly, requiring a fair amount of time to clean up the names of the entries. If you have questions, contact Hill Henry, at thillhenry@gmail.com.

If a Participant wants his/her images displayed on Zenfolio but not judged, that can be stated in the email with the submissions.

Note: Challenge image submissions will be posted in a Challenge Gallery on the SANP Zenfolio website accessible to the public. Winners will be displayed on SANP social media, the SANP website, and in the SANP Newsletter.

    Equipment Specifications:

    • Camera: Any handheld type of camera is allowed. Canon is the preferred brand, but by all means, submissions from other brands of cameras will be accepted (Drones are not allowed.)
    • Lens focal length: Only lens focal lengths from 12 to 300 mm may be used (35mm equivalent focal lengths). Incorporating a wide angle lens can be challenging but the results could be exceptional.
    • Filters: Neutral density, polarizing, and closeup filters may be used.
    • Flash: On-camera or off-camera flash is allowed.
    • Tripod: Any tripod is allowed.
    • Cell Phone: Any cell phone is allowed.
    • Other: The photographer must get signed model releases from any people recognizable in a photograph.

Photography Technique Specifications: Incorporate wildlife into broad scenes highlighting their existence or movement through the environment and associated landscape.

    Processing Technique Specifications: None

    Entering Challenge Images for Judging

Description of Event: We will discuss and share information on producing images in the field, using a tripod or handheld, for Focus Stacking. When to do it. How to do it. When not to do it. I will show examples of processing images in Photoshop and in Helicon Focus. We will all “do” a focus stack in Photoshop with images I provide at the meeting.

Who should come: Anyone interested in having more control over the DOF (depth-of-field) of their images. Must be able to import images into their LrC catalog — or be able to load images directly into Photoshop as layers.

What to bring: No experience necessary. Bring a laptop (fully charged) with Adobe Lightroom Classic & Adobe Photoshop installed. I will provide a folder with images on a flash drive for you to use to focus stack in Photoshop while at this FocusSession.

The wildflowers should be blooming in force at the River Bluff Trail including Bloodroot, Trout Lilies, and Dutchman's Breeches.  We will stick to the lower section of the trail along the river instead of the 3.2 mile loop.  However, if you venture all the way back to the Dutchman's Breeches, you will walk about 3 miles total at a slow pace.  There is a incline returning.  You have to walk at least 1/2 mile to get to the flowers so consider this and your physical abilities.  We will be going at a leisurely pace.

If the distance is an obstacle for you, please send Kelli an email.  If we have enough interest for a shorter walk at the same time, we can have a dual event at Savage Gardens which is close to River Bluff Trail.

Photography expands our appreciation and enjoyment of nature.  Sharing your photographs of nature enriches you and your viewers – whether family and friends or people in a senior living facility who are no longer able to venture outside.  In the 2024 FocusSessions, the elements of a cohesive, dynamic slideshow were discussed, including groupings of pictures and transitions between groupings to tell a story; titles, lists and captions to add to the story; and a music track to add a sense of progression and adventure.

Depending on membership interests, the SANP Community Outreach group will be reactivated or retired.  If reactivated, a webpage would be added to sanp.net that provides contact information that would be helpful to a facility activities director in planning and reaching out.  If you are interested in becoming part of this group and giving presentations, please attend this FocusSession.  If you are unable to attend, please respond to me by email on your interest.  I envision a periodic meeting (perhaps monthly) to share in developing slideshows and with feedback on presentations.  During this meeting, I will show an abbreviated slideshow that I have presented.

Location: Tremont Lodge and Resort, 7728 E Lamar Alexander Pkwy, Townsend, TN 37882 (865-448-3200

Time:  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Description of the event:

It is a beginning to intermediate processing class with a focus not only on how to edit, but also why you would want to make certain editing decisions. This is an additional class that I offer to all Tremont workshop attendees the day after the Tremont workshop wraps up. I’m offering it again this spring and inviting SANP members to attend as well. This additional class is not associated with the Tremont Institute.

We will start the class at 9:00 am on April 14 and go until about 4:00 pm with a break for lunch. We can go longer or shorter as necessary. I’ll cover everything from digital basics to output. We’ll cover a variety of editing tools in Lightroom and Photoshop, including global and local adjustments, as well as image blending techniques. Importantly, I’ll talk about the “why” of image processing and offer some ideas on how to approach the image editing process in general. We’ll also spend time on some real-world examples, maybe even some of your images if anyone is willing to share them. My goal is to cover topics of interest for beginner through intermediate photographers. Several of you have attended my previous classes, so I plan to add information for repeat attendees.

If you are interested in attending or if you have any questions, please let me know and I’ll reply as soon as possible.

The class is free, but you will have to pay for your own lunch and bring any snacks or beverages to have during the class.  We usually go to lunch together at a restaurant in Townsend, typically the Peaceful Side Social. For snacks and drinks during the class, people should bring their own. The Lodge does not have vending machines.

Who should Come:  Photographers of all levels who want to improve their photography editing skills.

Format:  To help attendees gather and retain as much information as possible, I encourage them to take notes and also to take photos of my slides throughout the class. Afterwards, I send a PDF of the slide deck that they can use as a reference of what we covered.

What to bring: Note pad for taking notes during class.

SANP's third annual picnic will be held at the Louisville Point Pavilion beginning at 4:30 pm. and ending by 6:30 pm.

The annual picnic will be at Louisville Point Pavilion on Fort Loudon Lake like last year. We will be having Buddy's BBQ, including pulled pork, hot dogs, beans and cole slaw, plus iced tea.  We may even celebrate our President's birthday too.  The cost is $10 for SANP members, and $15 for guests.  SANP is subsidizing some of the costs of the picnic for members as a benefit of membership.

Also, we will have a special guest at our picnic - Owl Ridge Raptor Center will be coming with some ambassador birds, perhaps a Screech Owl, Barred Owl, and Great Horned Owl.  You will have the opportunity to see these birds up close and learn how we can help protect birds of prey.

    More details to come!
