SANP is proud to present, with the assistance of Roger Trentham, a Blue Ghost Firefly workshop.  Roger is a nature and wildlife photographer in the Gatlinburg area.  Roger conducts numerous workshops throughout the year with national photographers in addition to his workshops. Roger has agreed to do this workshop for SANP members.  Roger will be offering instruction on how to photograph the Blue Ghost Fireflies

Please read all the details about this workshop.

Why Should You Attend Roger’s Workshop: You will have the opportunity to photograph the Blue Ghost Fireflies which are unique and fly closer to the ground than most fireflies.  This workshop will begin a classroom presentation at 6:00 p.m. of firefly photography then a demonstration of shooting backgrounds in the forest around Roger's residence. Sunset is approximately 8:40 p.m. with actual firefly photography beginning about 9:30 p.m. and concluding at 11:00 p.m.(longer if the fireflies cooperate).

The following image is the blue ghost fireflies with out a background image.

What to Bring:  Your camera and lens with a small folding type chair and flashlight. Tripods are required and shutter release cable is recommended. Insect repellant will be necessary,  Roger will have deet based repellants but some people may wish to bring their own.

Participants should bring a long lens for the possibility of photographing bears before dark. If bears appear during the classroom presentation, we’ll photograph bears but they may or may not appear. Each participant will be shooting almost continuous thirty second exposures for one and one half hours. They will be taking approximately 150 firefly images in addition to background images and possibly bears. Two fully charged batteries are recommended.

The following image is blue ghost fireflies after being processed.  Roger will provide instruction on how to accomplish this type of image.
