Attracting and photographing birds in your backyard.
The importance of native plants in attracting birds to your property.

Carl Ackerman is a new speaker for SANP, but he will address a topic that many members are very interested in. After reading about Carl, make plans to attend the club meeting on Tuesday night to hear Carl’s presentation.
Tucked away in a corner of a yard in the upstate of South Carolina is a haven for backyard birds. Carl Ackerman calls it The Nut House. It’s a place where nature, landscaping, and photography meet. It’s a place for the birds.
Carl will share his love for nature photography, especially his passion for photographing birds. He'll draw upon his experience as a landscaper to offer ideas for how others can create bird-friendly habitats in their own yards.
Carl Ackerman is an award-winning photographer from Clemson, SC. He is best known for his work as the Lead Sports Photographer for Clemson Athletics. He has traveled all over the country with various sports teams to capture many important moments in Clemson's sports history. His sports images have been published by various print outlets, including program and magazine covers, wall murals, and an outstanding National College Football Championship book.

Carl is a well-rounded photographer. He has experience in photographing weddings, family portraits, infants, pets, headshots, and various sports and award banquets. He also has extensive knowledge of working with flash and studio lighting setups. But he has given most of that up to return to his first love of nature and wildlife photography. He has put his heart and soul into creating a backyard bird haven called The Nut House.

Before becoming a sports photographer, Carl owned and operated a successful Lawn and Landscape Maintenance company for 23 years. For the past 10+ years, Carl has used his knowledge of plants and landscaping to design and build his backyard bird oasis. He has been busy adding native plants, perennial flowers, and natural water features. The diverse habitat he has created continues to draw a wider variety of birds each year.

His love for bird photography has made him passionate about wildlife habitat conservation and restoration. He hopes to inspire others to make their backyards a friendlier place for birds and other wildlife. Carl is also a splendid teacher. His laid-back persona may appear to mask his photographic knowledge, but he can explain the whys and how clearly. Be sure to check out the rest of his website: CarlAckerman.com.
