This is a Saturday afternoon venture into the Smokies.  Bring your zoom lens and enjoy photographing the elk. Be prepared to do some walking to photograph the elk.  The walking will be on mostly flat terrain or roadway areas. We will try to be in place for the elk as they cross the river from the Cherokee side to the Oconaluftee fields. We should be in place to watch the elk as they will start arriving after we arrive and should stay out until dusk.  This area has a bull with one of the largest antler racks. How many we see in this area will vary due to the hazy by the rangers. We may decide to venture to some of the other areas for viewing the elk.  Carpooling is encouraged.  Arriving on time is important.

Learning opportunities:

This is a good opportunity to practice your wildlife shooting with various lighting.

What to wear:   Bring a jacket as the temperature will drop as the sun goes down.  Dress for the weather.

What to bring:  Camera, tripod, water, snacks and whatever you need to be comfortable photographing.

Walking required: Walking to photographed the elk will be necessary as the elk could be moving from the different fields along the river and road. It will be at a walking pace but might be a couple miles overall.
